First Steps

The first steps I should take after creating a new blog

This is a short tutorial on what to do as soon as you build your site.

Maybe the best plan is to just TRY it. (“Just do it!” – you probably will not destroy the world <grin>).

  1. Log in at your blog. (You will have ADMIN privileges there and the system will open at your “Dashboard.”
  2. Visit the SETTINGS menu (the menus are on the left side) and change each settings page to reflect your preferences.
  3. Visit the APPEARANCE menu & click on Themes. Then c hoose – and ACTIVATE – a THEME for your site. You can “PREVIEW” before activating it.
  4. Visit the APPEARANCE page and see if there is an OPTIONS page for the THEME that you have selected. If so, complete the settings for that.
  5. Visit the APPEARANCE / Widgets page and add the widgets of your choice to the sidebar(s). (Be CERTAIN to add the “Meta” widget since that includes the site login function.”
  6. Then, at the PLUGINS menu, click on “Add New.” (Plugins add some additional function to your site.) Select and ACTIVATE one plugin at a time. Generally, each plugin will add a new settings page & a new widget.
  7. Complete the settings for the plugin.
  8. Visit the APPEARANCE / WIDGETS page and move the widget for that plugin to the sidebar and see if it does something worthwhile. If so, keep it and try another plugin. If not just DEACTIVATE it.
  9. Go to step 5 and repeat the steps for a different plugin.

It will not take long until you have a great looking (and acting) site.

At that point, you just need to WRITE articles of interest to your users (content is king) & advertise your site wherever you can. Best advertisement: I recommend that you build a network of followers in Facebook and TWITTER (especially Twitter). Then go to those sites and announce each new article and provide a link directly to the article.

To get the link address for a particular article, visit a website, then click on the TITLE of the article that you want to publicize. When the article page appears (not the homepage), then just copy the address from your browser’s address bar. (Generally, just hold the mouse while you move across the text, then release, point at the highlighted text, press the RIGHT mouse button, select COPY). Paste (point the mouse where  you want the text, RIGHT-click, select PASTE) that address as a link in FB.

For Twitter, you may need to shorten the link. I recommend http://bit.ly as a great link shortener. You don’t have to sign up but I recommend it. Actually, if you have a Bit.ly account, you can install the Bit.ly plugin to most browsers. Then, it will automatically shorten the link and enable you to post to twitter right there.

In order for your link to go “viral” other people have to repost it. The best way to get people to do that is to repost some of their articles to your friends. In Twitter this is called “ReTweet” or RT. Use it wisely and others will RT your stuff as well. It will help build your network – and advertise your articles and your site.

Blessings on you and your work…
